Walk along the tree-lined road and pass in front of the mountain gate of Shinpukuin Temple which has Sanskrit stone Buddhas in its grounds to Mt. Obora. The name of the mountain comes from the Japanese name for conch shells that mountain ascetics (Shugendo worshippers) carry as this is what it resembles. Mt. Obora is composed of two peaks, Mt. Medake and Mt. Odake, which have been connected with religion since ancient times. Long ago, people cleansed themselves in the Tani River before praying. From there, pass Otawa and climb Mt. Amagalake, the Mt. Fuji of lga. On the way back go through the Kurahone Pass to the Tokai Nature Trail and walk along the path of moss- covered flagstones lo return to the climbing entrance to Mt. Obora.
